Edinburgh Previews 2007 Week 2

More great shows coming up at the lovely Old Joint Stock Theatre (above the Old Joint Stock pub opposite the main door of Birmingham Cathedral).

This week’s shows are real gems, I’m looking forward to them both immensely.

Tuesday 24th July

Robin Ince – still best known to many for his frequent support slots to his friend Ricky Gervaise, Robin has been one of the more intriguiging and quirky acts on the circuit for some years. Lately he has been furthering his name amongst the comedic and literary cognescenti with his own unique addition to the comedy club format, the Book Club. Robin Ince Knew This Would Happen is about how evolutionary advantages become disadvantages – the creature with sugar lust has enough energy to outrun that big scary bear but a few million years down the line that’s also why it now has to be cut out of its bed by fireman when it needs to go to the toilet. “A brilliant comic with a genius for improvisation” – Time Out

Milton Jones – a slight cheat as Milton isn’t actually appearing at Edinburgh, rather is warming up for his Autumn tour, but its a real joy to book a comic who I rate as a true master of wordplay. Few other comics can sustain a full length show using gags that are mostly one or two liners, but then most comics don’t have Milton’s genius for surreal, mind-twisting comic marvels. Fans of his previous award wininng live shows, or his Radio 4 or BBC 7 series will know exactly what I mean. “King of the surreal one-liners” The Times

Wednesday 25th July

Toby Hadoke – this show actually appeared at last year’s Edinburgh, but such was its popularity that its coming back again this year as part of a national tour. Needless to say fans of Doctor Who are going to absolutely love this show, but it goes way beyond a trip through time charting the rise, fall and subsequent rise of a television legend to movingly explore a personal, satirical and razor sharp comic odyssey from child to man, through obsession, joy and disappointment. This show is so good it’s just been broadcast on BBC 7 and released as an audio book – you know it’ll be ten times better live tho. “poignant, heartfelt and heroic” – The Guardian

Steve Hughes – an Aussie comic who started out onstage as the drummer in a heavy metal band – and still looks the part today. His demeanour might be laid back, but his comedy is ascerbic and razor sharp, brilliantly deconstructing stereotypes and blowing away misconceptions. He has a freedom loving, almost anarchic view of life with opinions underpinned by a really sharp comic and political mind. You want to hear some refresingly honest and direct points of view on topics like religion, war, politics, drugs and metal, and laugh your ass off in the process, this is absolutely the gig for you. “Hard-edged social commentary at it’s best.” The Times
