Inspired partly by a terrific post from Pete Ashton featuring ten birmingham bands that are quite bloody marvellous and also the need to recruit performers for future Project X Presents events I’ve just had a quick mental round up of some of my favourite local acoustic acts.
Im going to wimp out for the moment of reveiwing each one, but I’ve linked directly to their myspaces so you can listen for yourself. Please take this as a start the ball rolling sort of post – Id love to see either on your comments here, or on other local blogs on this subject.
in no particular order:
Mickey Greaney
Ben Drummond
Matt Geary
Ben Calvert
Vijay Kishore
Gary Nock
Chris Tye
Jules Gray (ok he’s moved to Cheltenham but I love him and his music)
Richard Burke
Khaliq
cheers

[…] Ten Brilliant Birmingham Acoustic Acts Rich Batsford makes a list: Mickey Greaney, Ben Drummond, Matt Geary, Ben Calvert, Vijay Kishore, Gary Nock, Chris Tye, Jules Gray, Richard Burke & Khaliq. (There’s a meme in this I reckon, Have a go yourself.) (tags: music lists 10) […]
Cheers for this Rich. But the next question is, where can we see them all play.
There’s a great night in Brighton called Bleeding Hearts which takes place above a pub once a month – three acoustic acts doing no more than 15 minutes each (so drunken audience members don’t have to stop their conversations for too long). Is there an equivalent in Birmingham?
Thanks for the comment. My favourite three gigs from my experience of the Birmingham acoustic scene so far are Saturday Night at the Queens, Bohemian Jukebox and the Lunar Society.

i would like to add yourself, John Napier, Chrissy Van Dyke, Andy Wickett, Gemma Quarterman to that list, indeed there is a venerable amount of talent in this fair city, and probably more who i havent been able to see or hear. Think Ive seen everyone except Jules Gray, will check him out.
I’d add Dan Hartland to the list and second the comment about Saturday Night at the Queens. And in one of those small-world moments Dan is playing The Queens this Saturday (9th Feb)… and it’s free.
